Nimba Electoral District # 9 Captures Trophy

first_imgNimba County Electoral District # 9 has captured the trophy of the week long district league in the grand final played at the Kumasi Sport Pitch in Ganta City, Nimba County to climax the celebration of July 26 Independence Day.The final match between Districts #9 and #3 began at 4pm with District # 3 dominating the first quarter of the first half with District #3 striker William Gala sent a spot kick into the hands of their opponents’ goalkeeper.In the 33rd minute a penalty was awarded to District # 9 after a long kick from the corner touched the hand of one of District #3 defenders and Marcus Paye scored the penalty.District #3 boys tried all techniques to find the equalizer but to no avail till the end of the half. The second half began with District #3 mounting making several substitutions but could not till the game ended. A giant size trophy was awarded the first winner with some unspecified cash while several awards went to 2nd and 3rd winners.The game brought together about ten thousand Namibians to support their various districts and it is the first such a tournament has been held, since the end of the civil-war.The Steering Committee of Nimba Sport Association, headed by Prince Howard told spectators that the tournaments was intended to bring together all talented players that could be selected for the county national soccer team. Arun Alagappan also swept three singles sets for Cerritos (2-0). Joey Szilagyi and Kris Johnson swept their doubles sets for the Braves at the Mayfair Tournament. Boys golf Santa Margarita 190, SJ Bosco 214 Cameron McCann led the Braves (2-2, 1-1) with a 3-over-par 39 in a Trinity League loss at Coto de Caza Country Club. Wilson 192, Fountain Valley 225 Senior Eric Lyon shot a 1-over 37 at Old Ranch Country Club to lead the Bruins (4-0) to the victory. O’Neill Cowan and Scott Yeakel each shot 38 for Wilson. Downey 226, Mayfair 243 Angel Hernandez led the Vikings (2-2) to a nonleague victory with a round of 41 at Rio Hondo Golf Course. Arpit Bhagat shot a 43 for Downey. The Monsoons (1-2) were led by Mike Mendez’s 45. Warren 213, Montebello 235 Art Saro shot a 1-under 35 at Montebello Country Club to lead the Bears to a nonleague victory in their season opener. Mike Amarilla and Chris Hurst each shot 43 for Warren. Valley Christian 213, Whitney 233 Shane Symens and Jamison Hughes each shot a 41 at Los Amigos Golf Course to lead the Crusaders (2-0) to a nonleague win. Boys volleyball Lynwood 3, Norwalk 2 Senior outside hitter Andy Morales had 28 kills and senior setter Cesar Arriola had 22 assists for the visiting Knights (2-0) in a 25-20, 25-13, 13-25, 18-25, 15-11 nonleague victory. Los Alamitos 3, Redondo 0 The host Griffins (2-0) swept Redondo (0-1), 25-19, 25-19, 25-17 in the nonleague win. Softball San Pedro 5, Birmingham 0 Junior Taylor Petty tossed a perfect game for 6 2/3 innings before allowing her only hit as the Pirates easily won their opener. Petty, the Press-Telegram Dream Team Player of the Year in 2006, struck out 16. Perelini Koria had a pair of home runs and three RBI. Girls swimming Millikan 113, Diamond Bar 57 Junior Kallie Berry won the 200 freestyle (2:05.95) and the 500 free (5:47.62) and swam on two winning relays for the Rams (2-0) in a nonleague meet.
