Instant Geology and Undersea Activity

first_imgWe’re accustomed to thinking of geological processes as slow and gradual, except for volcanoes, earthquakes and landslides, but some recent stories are surprising for the speed and extent of active processes.Run: The Earth Is Splitting Apart:  Geologists were amazed to find a rift in the Afar desert east of Ethiopia opening up 8 meters wide and 60 kilometers long in just three weeks, reported BBC News.  They call this a rapid episode in the slow formation of a new ocean basin, a process that normally takes millions of years.  This rapid change was called “unprecedented in scientific history.”Springs of the Sea:  Hydrothermal vents are popping up everywhere, wherever scientists look.  USA Today said they ocean floor is covered with them; MSNBC News said they are not just along tectonic plate boundaries like the pacific Ring of Fire, as previously assumed.Wow, at 8 meters every 3 weeks, that ocean basin would be 82,000 miles wide in a million years, bigger than the whole earth!  Just kidding, of course.  Nobody is saying that is a typical or uniform rate.  It does illustrate, however, that big things can happen in a short time if the conditions are right.  Faster rates than that could be envisioned, and must have been the case for certain large-scale, catastrophically-formed regions.    It’s time to relegate Lyell to the history books where he belongs.  His uniformitarian gradualism was useful to Darwin in the Victorian age.  Darwin became obsessed with the vision of how large changes could occur by the accumulation of small variations over long eons of time.  That vision has seen too many challenges to be assumed in our day.    By the way, how did the ancient philosopher Job know about hydrothermal vents?  “Have you entered the springs of the sea?  Or have you walked in search of the depths?” (Job 38:16).  He must have been told by someone who knew.  There’s another source of data too often overlooked by moderns: direct testimony from the Architect.(Visited 28 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Food and ag policy absent from presidential campaigns

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest As half a dozen presidential candidates barnstorm across the state in advance of Ohio’s crucial primary election, we have heard almost nothing about Ohio’s largest industry. In Ohio, we have been proud to tout our agriculture and food industries as one of our most important economic sectors, but our agricultural leaders have not been successful at holding the candidate’s feet to the fire about the future of Ag and Food policy. This election year coincides with a period of serious economic stress in the ag community, and a time when we should be making critical decisions about such important issues as food labeling and the structure of our next farm bill. We call on presidential candidates to “steak” out their positions on issues critical to our future food system. We have heard both sides of the argument about the benefits and liabilities of international trade agreements, mostly related to manufacturing jobs. Absent in these discussions has been comprehensive analysis of the impacts of lesser-known impacts trade agreements such as Investor-State Dispute Resolution (ISDR), which will allow both nations and corporations to bring disputes against federal, state or local governments who may enact preferences for domestic or locally-sourced products. We have recently witnessed the sad results of the World Trade Organization’s dispute resolution case regarding our Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) law for meats. In this case, the WTO resolution panel, chaired by one of the litigant nations, ruled against a U.S. law that had the support of 94% of American consumers and 90% of independent American farmers. None of the candidates has mentioned this important element of trade agreements, nor have they mentioned the fact that it is now more difficult for U.S. consumers to determine from where their food originates.Even more timely is the currently ongoing debate about labeling of foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). On the heels of legislation passed by Vermont requiring the labeling of such foods, and fearing the evolution of a patchwork of differing labeling requirements, Congress is contemplating a federal statute that would establish uniform labeling requirements, while preempting any state or local initiatives to do so.As in the COOL debate, American consumers strongly support a requirement for accurate labeling of GMO products, but corporate food industry interests strongly oppose it. This issue is of utmost importance for the future of our food system — and the marketing efforts of a growing number of family farmers around Ohio and the U.S. who are earning more per unit for their production of non-gmo grains, milk, eggs, livestock and other food.At this critical moment in history, with political sentiments as broadly dispersed as any time in recent memory, we call upon our presidential candidates to make their positions known on important issues such as these.last_img read more

MSNBC.com Acquires Hyperlocal News Site EveryBlock

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#news#NYT#web A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… frederic lardinois Related Posts MSNBC.com just announced that it has acquired EveryBlock, a ‘hyperlocal’ news and information site that has been publishing and aggregating data and news stories for 16 American cities for the last two years. EveryBlock aggregates local news stories, but it also makes publicly available information like data about restaurant inspections and crimes available in an easy to read format. EveryBlock had been funded by a two-year grant from the Knight Foundation. This is MSNBC.com’s second major acquisition, having bought the social news site Newsvine in October 2007.Neither MSNBC nor EveryBlock released specifics about the price of the acquisition, but the site’s founder, Adrian Holovaty, and his team will remain based in Chicago. According to MSNBC.com’s president Charlie Tillinghast, EveryBlock will remain an independent brand, though MSNBC will surely try to integrate some of EveryBlock’s data into the main MSNBC.com site, which doesn’t feature a lot of local news at this point. Local EveryBlock sites are currently available for Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. While a number of other companies, including Outside.in, for example, also aggregate local news from blogs and mainstream news sources, EveryBlock stands out because of how well it displays local information from public records. For example, the site aggregates data about everything from building permits and police calls to liquor license status changes and excavation permits – data that is generally hidden away on government websites that are often hard to navigate.EveryBlock’s source code is freely available under the GPL license. The site was built on top of the Django framework. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostinglast_img read more

HOW CANADIAN ACTORS ERASE ACCENTS FOR US WORK

first_imgWhen Howie Mandel played a Boston doctor on the 1980s medical drama St. Elsewhere it wasn’t the medical jargon he struggled with — it was his Canadian accent.“I can’t tell you how many times they stopped filming on St. Elsewhere because I said ‘intes-tyne’ instead of ‘intest-tin,’ or I said ‘dra-ma’ instead of ‘draw-ma,”‘ says the Toronto-born America’s Got Talentjudge.“They just kicked the Canada out of me.” Advertisement Twitter Over Canada’s 150-year history, the Canuck English accent has varied in sound and strength, depending on the region. And it comes through more in certain words — like about, mouth, pasta, lava and avocado.Howie Mandel remembers saying ‘intes-tyne’ instead of ‘intest-tin,’ as preferred when he played a doctor on the 1980s medical drama St. Elsewhere. (Peter Power/Canadian Press)Though the accent can be subtle at times, it can be a hard one for some homegrown actors to shake when they’re playing non-Canadian characters.“You can’t say ‘drama’ or ‘pasta’ or ‘story,”‘ says Vancouver-born comedy star Seth Rogen, whose AMC series Preacher is into its second season.Only a few words ‘an issue’“I consciously have to not talk like a Canadian, if I’m playing an American character. There are only four or five words for me that really have become an issue.”Big Little Lies star James Tupper of Dartmouth, N.S., says he “went home in tears” while trying to shake his spirited accent in drama school. ‘I just didn’t hear it and it took me forever, but I finally did learn the variations in my tongue and how to make an American sound, and I feel confident with it now.’– Actor James Tupper“I just couldn’t hear it,” he says. “I would say, ‘It’s not very fa-her to the ca-her.’ They would say, ‘It’s not very far to the car.’ I just didn’t hear it and it took me forever, but I finally did learn the variations in my tongue and how to make an American sound, and I feel confident with it now.“But I’ll tell you what — when I go home, the wild Nova Scotian that lives in me comes out. I have the thickest accent of any Nova Scotian you’ve ever imagined.”Big Little Lies star James Tupper says he’s confident he can pass for an American, despite having ‘the thickest accent of any Nova Scotian you’ve ever imagined.’ (Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP)Property Brothers star Drew Scott says he also worked hard to get rid of his accent while acting in his native Vancouver.“One of the issues I had is a lot of U.S. shows coming to shoot there and they said, ‘You’re a great actor but I can still hear the Canadian-isms,’ and I needed to not have that,” says Scott.Bee-n versus bin“The funny words that you watch out for are ‘tomorrow’ which sounds like ‘tah-more-oh,’ or ‘about,”‘ adds twin brother/co-star Jonathan. “The word ‘been,’ Americans say ‘bin’ but Canadians say ‘bee-n.”‘Still, some actors don’t bother going through such great pains.Toronto-raised Mike Myers, for instance, proudly injected his Canuck accent in his American Wayne’s World character.“Wayne has a Scarborough accent with a Canadian rise. I made no attempt to sound like he was from Chicago,” says Myers, who has a section on the Canadian English accent in his book “Canada.”“(While acting) in England it was, ‘Should I be American, should I be a limey?’ And I was just like, ‘Ah, just be Canadian.”‘According to Charles Boberg, an associate professor of linguistics at McGill University, there are two main differences in Canadian English pronunciation of vowels.‘Canadian rising’ with vowels“One of them is called ‘Canadian rising,’ and this is the stereotype that most Americans have of Canadian English and it involves the ‘OU’ vowel sound and the ‘I’ vowel. It’s referring to raising the pronunciation of the vowel in the mouth,” says Boberg, author of The English Language in Canada.“When we say ‘raising’ we mean that the tongue isn’t as low for pronunciation of words like ‘mouth’ and ‘price’ for Canadians as it is for Americans.”Canadian raising, which Boberg says may have its origins in Scottish English, has stuck with Mandel: “I still don’t hear the Canadian ‘about’ … but I’m told that sometimes I say it — ‘about,’ or ‘house,”‘ he says. Then there’s the “Canadian shift,” which involves vowels moving around in the mouth, leading to subtle pronunciations like “drass” instead of “dress.”Shift on the letter ‘a’The Canadian English accent also comes through in words that hail from other languages and the main vowel sound is spelled with the letter “A.”“An example would be … ‘paw-sta’ is the American pronunciation but ‘pa-sta’ is the Canadian pronunciation and really sounds weird to Americans,” says Boberg. Those on Canada’s West and East Coasts pronounce words differently than those in the central provinces. On the West Coast, for instance, words like “out and about” are pronounced more like “oat and aboat,” says Boberg.Blending in easier for actors from B.C., PrairiesThe western Canadian dialect is similar to that of California, making it easier for homegrown actors from British Columbia or the Prairies to blend in linguistically in Hollywood, he adds.“What’s funny is the hardest time I probably ever had doing (an accent) was when I was in Sarah Polley’s (Canadian) movie (Take This Waltz),” says Rogen.“In the West Coast, we don’t say ‘about’ like how they do in the East Coast of Canada and I was supposed to be a guy from Toronto and I couldn’t for the life of me say ‘about’ like a guy from Toronto does.” Facebook Advertisementcenter_img LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment Mike Myers, seen here with Dana Carvey in a recreated scene from Wayne’s World, says he proudly kept his Canadian accent while playing a character who was supposed to be from a Chicago suburb. Imran Khan says Indo-Pak relations to remain tense till elections in India

first_imgIslamabad: Prime Minister Imran Khan has said Indo-Pak relations would remain tense till the general elections in India are over, adding he feared “another misadventure” by Pakistan’s eastern neighbour. Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the February 14 attack by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pulwama. Amid mounting outrage, the Indian Air Force carried out a counter-terror operation, hitting what it said was a JeM training camp in Balakot, deep inside Pakistan on February 26. The next day, Pakistan Air Force retaliated and downed a MiG-21 in an aerial combat and captured an Indian pilot, who was handed over to India later. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from USKhan said shadows of war were still hovering over Pakistan and India as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration could go for “another misadventure” before the general elections. “The danger is not over. The situation will remain tense till forthcoming general elections in India. We are already prepared to avert any aggression from India,” Dawn quoted Khan as saying. Khan also claimed that he cancelled his scheduled meeting with the Taliban in Islamabad due to “concerns” expressed by the Afghan government. The Taliban last month said that its representatives would visit Islamabad to meet Prime Minister Khan on February 18. Media reports later suggested that the Taliban called off the meeting as most of the members of their negotiating team could not travel to Pakistan due to sanctions imposed on them by the US and the United Nations.last_img read more

Rahul expresses ‘regret’ once again over his remarks in SC

first_imgNew Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi expressed “regret” once again in the Supreme Court on Monday for his “chowkidar chor hai” remark on the Rafale judgement, which the apex court had said was “incorrectly attributed” to it.The apex court on April 15 had given a categorical clarification that in its Rafale verdict there was no occasion for it to make a mention of the contemptuous observation that “chowkidar Narendra Modi chor hain” as has been attributed to it by Gandhi. Also Read – 2019 most peaceful festive season for J&K: Jitendra SinghGandhi, who filed a fresh affidavit following the formal notice issued to him by the apex court on a criminal contempt petition filed against him by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi, has written the word “regret” in bracket. On April 22, Gandhi had filed an affidavit in response to the apex court’s order asking him to give an explanation over his remarks and had said that he was expressing “regret” over it. However, during the hearing in the matter on April 23, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Lekhi, had told a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that the word ‘regret’ was in a bracket and actually it was a “lip service of apology”. Also Read – Personal life needs to be respected: Cong on reports of Rahul’s visit abroadIn his fresh affidavit, Gandhi reiterated what he had said in his explanation earlier that his statement was made in the “heat of political campaigning” and there was not the “slightest intention to insinuate” anything regarding the Supreme Court proceedings in any manner. He said his April 10 statement was made in purely political context to counter the “misinformation campaign” being led by senior BJP functionaries as well as the government that the apex court verdict on December 14 last year was a “clean chit” to the Centre regarding all the aspects of the Rafale deal. “My statement was made in the heat of political campaigning. It has been used (and misused) by my political opponents to project that I had deliberately and intentionally suggested that this Court had said ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’! Nothing could be farther from my mind,” he said in his 28-page affidavit. “It is also clear that no court would ever do that and hence the unfortunate references (for which I express regret) to the court order and to the political slogan in juxtaposition the same breath in the heat of political campaigning ought not to be construed as suggesting that the court had given any finding or conclusion on that issue,” Gandhi said in his affidavit filed through advocate Sunil Fernandes. Gandhi clarified that he did not have the “slightest or remotest intention, desire or even thought process, to bring the court into the political arena or bring it into disrepute or attribute to it deliberately or willfully that which the court had not said or meant”. Referring to a media interview by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi said Modi had “clearly suggested” that the apex court had given him a clean chit in the Rafale deal.last_img read more

On 158th birth anniversary: Rare oil paintings by Tagore, contemporaries to be displayed by RBU

first_imgKolkata: Art lovers in the city for the first time will get the opportunity to witness a number of oil paintings by eminent painters including Rabindranath Tagore himself with the Rabindra Bharati Museum (RBM) putting on display these artworks at the Jorasanko campus of Rabindra Bharati University (RBU) on the occasion of the 158th birth anniversary of the legend which falls on May 9.”There are 72 oil paintings by Tagore’s contemporaries in our collection. Some larger paintings are already on display at the Western Art Gallery of the Museum but 53 of them, mostly smaller in size, were kept in the air-conditioned museum strong room away from public view for shortage of space. All these will be unveiled in a visible storage space that has been created in the campus,” said Baisakhi Mitra, curator-in-charge of RBM. Bulk of this collection was gifted by Maharaja Prabirendra Mohan Tagore and Kumar Purnendu Nath Tagore of Pathuriaghata. The conditions of the paintings deteriorated over time due to natural processes and the effects of pollution in the heart of Kolkata. However, even after the restoration work carried out in two phases that ended in July 2013, the paintings again found its place in the strong room due to paucity of display space. “A grant from the Union Ministry of Culture helped us in setting up a visible storage space in which 53 of the remaining oil paintings could be displayed for art connoisseurs across the world,” said RBU Vice-Chancellor Sabyasachi Basu Ray Chaudhury. Also Read – Bengal civic volunteer dies in road mishap on national highwayThe most important painting that will be displayed is the one titled “Three Witches from Macbeth” done by Tagore himself who began painting it when he was in his 60s. Tagore had produced around 3,000 drawings and paintings and was the first Indian artist to exhibit his works across Europe, Russia and the US in 1930. His painting style was very individualistic, characterised by simple bold forms and rhythmic quality and later inspired several modern artists. An oil painting by Hitendranath Tagore, the eldest son of Hemendranath, Debendranath’s third son, “Portrait of Maharshi Debendranath Tagore” done by Sashi Kumar Hesh, “Composition — Omar Khyam/Arabian Nights” by Asit Halder, “Family” by Ramkinkar Beij are among the noted paintings that will be on display. ‘Nation can be saved only if Modi is removed from Delhi’

first_imgCanning, Sonarpur (South 24-parganas): Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday that the country could only be saved if Prime Minister Narendra Modi is removed from Delhi. She called Modi “a riot manager” while talking about the Gujarat riots that took place in 2002 and expressed her disappointment in him as a Prime Minister. Banerjee addressed four rallies in Canning, Basanti, Baruipur and Sonarpur on Sunday afternoon. “Modi is a riot manager. After the Gujarat riot that took place in 2002 Atalji had asked him to follow Raj Dharma. He is vindictive and arrogant. It is a tragedy that we have a Prime Minister like him,” she said. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss account details under automatic exchange frameworkBanerjee said in the past five years, Modi did nothing for the development of the country and created tension among various religious communities. Banerjee further said that the BJP had been using the Central Force to campaign for the party. “I have respect for the Central Force but the jawans are asking people to vote for Modi. What is going on? One of our supporters was injured by Central Force firing,” she said. The Chief Minister said Modi is spreading canard against Bengal every day. “He says in every election rally that I don’t allow Durga Pujas in Bengal. More than one lakh Durga Pujas are organised in Bengal and the number of Saraswati Pujas should be more than one crore. He is repeating the same old lies. He does no homework,” she said. Also Read – Trio win Nobel Medicine Prize for work on cells, oxygenBanerjee said the BJP has developed hatred for Bengal because this was the first state voices have been raised against Modi government. “During a meeting on July 21, 2018, I had said in 2019 the BJP will be finished and from the dais of the meeting I had said that a meeting would be held on January 19, 2019, which would be attended by leaders of 23 parties. The BJP is scared of Bengal and that is why they are criticising us,” she said. Banerjee said from time immemorial people of different religions are living peacefully in Bengal. “The Hindus take part in Iftar and many Muslims organise Durga puja in Bengal. The Sikhs, Christians, Budhists, and Jains follow their religions without problems. This is our culture and tradition. But, the BJP is trying to destabilise our society by trying to control every one. They can’t decide which God we should worship and what food we should eat. In the name of religion they incite one community against the other,” she said. Banerjee said Modi did not deposit Rs 15 lakh in the bank accounts of people that he had promised at the time of 2014 Lok Sabha election. Ten crore people are jobless and three crore people have lost jobs due to note ban. About 12,000 farmers committed suicide in the past five years. “He does not say a word about the poor development scenario in the country in the past five years and come to Bengal to find faults in the government here. Modi Babu you cannot dream of the projects that have been implemented in the past seven years in Bengal.” Banerjee urged people to vote for party nominees — Pratima Mondol in Joynagar and Mimi Chakraborty in Jadavpur — where elections will be held on May 19.last_img read more
