Crews pull dogs from aqueduct

first_imgPALMDALE – Alerted by a passing motorist, rescue crews saved two dogs from the chilly waters of the California Aqueduct, officials said Thursday. The animals – a Rottweiler and a German shepherd – were pulled out about 7:15p.m. Wednesday from the waterway near Pearblossom Highway and Barrell Springs Road, county fire Capt. John Haugh said. “It was right at dusk, and it was pretty cold,” Haugh said. “You could see they were shivering, and hypothermic, I’m sure. “They were ready to get out.” The rescue involved an effort by the county departments of animal control and water resources. Two firefighters wearing flotation devices pulled the animals from the fast-moving current using a snare that slipped around the dogs’ necks. “They didn’t bark or growl,” Haugh said. “They wanted to be rescued.” The dogs, one of which was wearing a collar, were taken to a local animal shelter. gideon.rubin@dailynews.com (661) 267-7802160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
