Watch Prince Make It Rain During His Magical Super Bowl XLI Halftime Show [Full Video]

first_imgThe 2007 Super Bowl XLI saw the Indianapolis Colts top the Chicago Bears 29-17 in a muddy, rainy showdown, but perhaps the most victorious entertainment of the evening came from the Purple One himself.“Can you make it rain harder?” Prince asked the production managers of the halftime event, hours before he was to perform the biggest performance of his career. It was one of those heavy, tropical rain and wind storms in the heart of Miami; but for Prince, it was a dramatic advantage to the pivotal performance that carried in over a 100 million television viewers alone.“I was panicked. Prince was using four separate electric guitars; the stage was made out of a very slick tile, which when it got wet, was even more slippery,” explained one of the production managers. Along with the dancers, their heels, and all other electronic aspects involved, the state of the performance had a lot of reasons to worry.Carlos Santana Asks The NFL For ‘Real Live Music’ At Future Super Bowl Halftime ShowsYet, Prince, obviously, pulled through with one of the most epic halftime performances of all time. His guitar ringing, his voice soaring, and his overall demeanor taking the audience by storm; the rain became less of a distraction and more of an intensely beautiful spectacle.“He’s just one performer shaking the entire world,” described Jon Pareles, Senior Music Critic of the NY Times. Ultimately, Prince turned the horrific weather into his most powerful prop, mixing covers by Queen, The Foo Fighters, and Bob Dylan with originals hits like “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Purple Rain”. Grape Expectations.

first_imgAbout the only things green on Jacob Paulk’s 400-acre Irwin County vineyard are weeds and a new idea. Paulk puts ground-up muscadine grape seeds into capsules.”We have almost an oversupply of muscadines now,” Paulk said. He also has tons of grape seeds. Each muscadine grape has anywhere from two to four seeds. And for many years, Jacob Paulk just threw those seeds away. Not anymore. Now he dries and grinds the seeds into powder, then puts the powder into capsules. “We’re making a health food supplement out of it,” he said.Hand-packed CapsulesPaulk hand-packs hundreds of capsules with about a gram of powdered muscadine grape seeds each, then packages the capsules with his own label. He stresses the natural aspect of his product, using costlier all-natural, cellulose gel caps instead of a cheaper capsule. The 60-capsule bottles will go to health-food stores. He’s banking on the growing popularity of muscadine-seed powder among health-conscious shoppers.High in Antioxidants”We have found the seed in particular to be very, very high in antioxidant components,” said Romeo Toledo, a food scientist with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.Toledo praised Paulk’s ingenuity. “It’s a great use of a by-product that’s normally been thrown away,” he said.At least one other company, in North Carolina, is selling powdered muscadine seeds. “Not very many, though, have the capability to separate the seed from the grape,” he said. “Paulk is kind of unique because he has a deseeder that does a great job of separating the seed from the rest of the muscadine.”Not Just Growing GrapesPaulk switched his thinking from growing grapes to processing and selling what he grows, an approach UGA experts say other farmers need to adopt.Selling his powdered grape seeds directly to health food stores will enable Paulk to determine his own price, something many other farmers wish they could do.last_img read more

Michigan utility with 6.7 million customers to exit coal generation by 2040

first_imgMichigan utility with 6.7 million customers to exit coal generation by 2040 FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享The Detroit News:Consumers Energy said Wednesday it will stop using coal to generate electricity by 2040.The announcement comes as the utility company files a plan this week with the Michigan Public Service Commission outlining how it will meet that goal. The company said it will increase its use of renewable resources, especially solar, and begin closing its remaining five coal-fired units in 2023.Consumers’ announcement comes as inexpensive natural gas and renewable electricity has brought serious competition to coal-fired power plants. DTE Energy Co. said in May 2017 that it would close its five coal plants in Michigan by 2040.As a part of its plan, Consumers would close two coal-fired generating units at Karn Generating Complex in Hampton Township in 2023. The remaining two units at that facility would close in 2031, along with two units at the J.H. Campbell Plant in West Olive. A third unit at Campbell would serve consumers until 2040. Their retirement follows the closure of seven coal units in 2016.Consumers would increase renewable energy from 11 percent to 37 percent by 2030 and 43 percent by 2040. It would add 5,000 megawatt of solar energy throughout the 2020s in addition to wind and battery storage. The company also plans by 2040 to decrease carbon emissions by 80 percent from 2005 levels. The plan expects by 2040 a 22 percent decrease in electricity demand by improving and updating demand response, energy efficiency and the power gridConsumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, serves 6.7 million residents in the Lower Peninsula.More: Consumers Energy to end use of coallast_img read more

Bawaslu recommends postponing elections in areas affected by COVID-19

first_imgThe Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has recommended that the General Elections Commission (KPU) prepare for delays to the 2020 regional elections in areas where people have tested positive for COVID-19.Bawaslu head Abhan said Tuesday that the agency had sent a recommendation letter to the KPU on Monday, asking the commission to identify areas where “vote postponements” and “restaged votes” might take place. The terms pemilihan lanjutan (vote postponement) and pemilihan susulan (restaged vote), Abhan said, were stipulated in Law No. 10/2016 on regional elections. With a vote postponement, an ongoing election is scheduled for a later date after election organizers agree to halt it due to force majeure. With a restaged vote, the entire election process is redone from the start, also for reasons of force majeure.“The law doesn’t recognize a vote delay. Therefore, it’s important for the KPU to immediately map the areas where some election stages would still be feasible and the areas that would completely be unable to hold elections,” he said.Read also: Provinces, regencies holding elections in 2020 ‘highly vulnerable’ to disruption Areas the agency has identified as COVID-19 red zones are Bekasi, Depok, Cirebon and Purwakarta in West Java; Tangerang and South Tangerang in Banten; Surakarta in Central Java; Pontianak in West Kalimantan; Manado in North Sulawesi; Bali; and Yogyakarta.“The KPU should hold discussions with the relevant ministries on responding to the effects of the coronavirus, as well as issue a legal product as a guideline for us [Bawaslu] and the election participants,” Abhan said.He added that Bawaslu also recommended that the KPU implement a technical guideline for the mechanisms for each election stage with intensive communication between officials and voters.Bawaslu member M. Afifuddin said that Bawaslu, the KPU and the Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) would hold a joint meeting with the coordinating political, legal and security affairs minister and home minister on Wednesday to discuss the matter.Arwani Thomafi, the deputy chairman of the House of Representatives Commission II overseeing home affairs, agreed with Bawaslu’s recommendation, saying the KPU should immediately identify areas affected by the disease by coordinating with the relevant authorities.“A decision for a vote postponement or restaged vote in some regions should be based on objective conditions in the field; in this case, the mapping of areas exposed to the coronavirus,” the United Development Party (PPP) politician said.Read also: COVID-19: House, watchdog call for delay of regional electionsHouse Commission II deputy chairman Arif Wibowo said the 2020 regional elections should not be postponed entirely in all regions but only in the areas that were seriously affected.“We must see it case by case and measure it with accountable reasons. For example, we can look at an area’s election vulnerability index to mitigate conflict. There’s no need to delay an election in areas with good indexes,” said Arif, an Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician.Commission II chairman Ahmad Doli Kurnia of the Golkar Party urged the KPU not to be quick to delay a vote: “For the time being, just continue the stages of the elections that have been taking place. However, the KPU should limit activities involving large groups of people.”As of Tuesday, Indonesia had 172 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including in regions slated to hold the 2020 regional elections in September, such as Surakarta and Semarang in Central Java and Denpasar in Bali. At least five have died from the disease, while nine have recovered.Topics :last_img read more

Offshore WIND Conference Welcomes Startup Circular Energy

first_imgOffshore WIND Conference is proud to announce Founder and General Manager of Circular Energy, Arnold Groot, will be speaking at the session ‘Oil, gas, wind: friend or foe’. In this session the changing landscape of cooperation between oil, gas and wind will be discussed and what is in it for wind. Arnold will share his views on how Circular Energy’s power from gas can balance the North Sea offshore grid.Arnold Groot founded Circular Energy in 2016. In July this year, the startup successfully patented its concept to produce CO2 free power from North Sea gas. The company aims to build an offshore installation that is both a gas production facility and a zero emission gas fired power plant. The CO2 that is emitted during power generation will be captured and injected in the producing gas field. The power will be transmitted to shore, making use of the existing and planned offshore power grid where possible.Groot: “We are introducing an exciting innovative chain integration approach which can play a key role in the transition to a low carbon economy. By integrating our company to include a power station we develop gas fields – creating value from the recoverable natural gas in the North Sea – and we generate CO2 free power – enabling a steady flow of electricity to shore.” If the power cable would tie into an offshore wind farm rather than directly to shore, Circular Energy could balance the offshore grid, for example, during low wind spells. The startup from Delft is currently doing research into this with a subsidy under the System Integration North Sea program of TKI Offshore Wind (TKI Wind op Zee).Arnold has a background in oil & gas exploration and production in various roles including facilities engineering, asset management, corporate planning and strategy, and economics with Shell (UK, The Netherlands, Brunei, Nigeria), PetroCanada (UK, The Netherlands) and E.ON (Germany). Arnold has an MSc in Electrical & Electronics Engineering of Twente University and an MBA of Henley Management College. In 2016 he founded Circular Energy, a startup that aims to produce CO2-free power from North Sea gas.Joining Groot will be Rene Peters, Director Gas Technology at TNO and Ernst van Zuijlen, Director at GROW (Growing through RD&D in Offshore Wind). Agribusiness: Growing Industry Attracts More Students

first_img(File Photo)BATESVILLE – Indiana is one of the leading agricultural exporting states in the nation, and jobs in the industry now include much more than farming. We spoke with Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) President and CEO Bill Stanczykiewicz, who says the industry offers opportunities for people with degrees ranging from a high school diploma to a doctorate.“Agribusiness is a huge business in the state of Indiana,” Stanczykiewicz notes. “As many as 300 different career opportunities are available, and we are not just talking about farmers and ranchers, who are the front line producers.”According to Norman Borlaug, a Noble laureate who has been labeled as “agriculture’s greatest spokesman”, the U.S. will need to produce more food in the next 40 years than in the past 10,000 years combined to keep up with population growth.Stanczykiewicz vows that while there are a number of jobs now, it is a promising industry moving forward.“We need to make sure kids our aware of these opportunities so they can prepare themselves academically and take advantage of those job possibilities,” the IYI president said.Agribusiness requires a variety of career fields, such as public relations to communicate about the products; lawyers to patent new products; financial services to keep track of records; and researchers and scientists to study and further the understanding of crops.“Computer technology is also huge on the farm, certainly on the tractors and implements themselves,” Stanczykiewicz acknowledges. “The technology that is involved in drying bins now, are all computerized, so computer programmers are needed on the farm more than ever before”“That’s an example of the wide variety within these 300 career possibilities that are available.”Beck’s Hybrids, a family-owned and operated seed company out of Atlanta, Indiana, has increased hiring by 400 percent in the past five years, Stanczykiewicz notes.“That’s just one employer out of countless numbers of agribusiness employers in Indiana. It shows you jobs are available now and will be available in the future.”High schools throughout Southeast Indiana offer educational courses for students interested in studying agriculture. Children can also pursue hands-on learning through 4-H programs.Whether someone wants to work in a city or rural area, Stanczykiewicz says, “Agribusiness needs good communication people, the [company] may have that in-house or from a firm in the city. That is the same for legal, financial and computer jobs.”“There are so many jobs, doing so many things, based in so many areas that kids can take advantage of, anywhere in Indiana.”last_img read more
