The 10 Best Cinematographers of 2017 Ranked

first_img Facebook Advertisement Advertisement LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment The cinematography choices in “The Shape of Water” are interesting and unexpected. For a fairy tale that is so sincere and hopeful, cinematographer Dan Laustsen and Guillermo del Toro’s decision to keep the monochromatic, “Twilight Zone”-approach to lighting — the film was originally slated to be black-and-white — gives the film a mysterious feel and highlights the darkness that lay in the American ideal of 1962. The frames Palermo and Lowery find with their wide-lensed 4×3 frame are never confined by the limited space, but anchored in a position in which the act of eating pie or playing a song is utterly captivating. As the film moves through time, the cinematography shifts and helps tell the story that moves from elliptical, to “Blade Runner” dystopia, to a window to the past. It’s a remarkable accomplishment and 2017’s best example of what can accomplished when talented filmmakers embrace their limitations and fearlessly try something that scares them a little.9. “The Shape of Water”“The Shape of Water” – Fox Searchlight Login/Register With: Advertisement There were so many incredibly shot films this year that narrowing it down to 10 wasn’t easy. What follows is not an attempt the highlight the best-looking movies of the year, but the ones that used cinematography most effectively in building expressive, cinematic worlds. This list embraces exploration of form, creative use of limitations, and overcoming challenges with craft and innovation. Often, the awards-season narrative for below-the-line talent is scale and the most obvious use of craft; here, the focus is how form can be used to elicit emotion and tell a story. These are 10 films that do that exceeding well.10. “A Ghost Story”“A Ghost Story” – Andrew Droz Palermo A movie made with a small group of friends, shot in small house over a small number of days, is not supposed to be this visually big. But just like David Lowery’s film itself, cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo finds incredible depth and beauty in the simplicity of “A Ghost Story.” The film is a meditation on time, which Palermo matches with atmosphere-filled images that evoke mystery, loneliness, and classical elegance that can feel like a memory. African nations need to better utilize emerging technologies say UN experts

18 February 2009African Governments are failing to take advantage of technological advances that can improve the delivery of services to their citizens despite the growth in mobile and information and communications technology (ICT) across the continent, United Nations experts told a meeting in Ethiopia. “Such developments have not helped Africa to come to the forefront of e-government development,” said Richard Kerby, Inter-regional adviser on E-government for the UN Division for Public Administration and Development Management (DPADM).The “Electronic/Mobile Government in Africa” three-day workshop, which kicked off yesterday in Addis Ababa, aims to analyse how governments in the region have put various ICT and mobile applications to use, with a view to developing partnerships for capacity building. It is also an opportunity for the UN to further its thinking on the development of the UN Global Knowledge Repository, an online storeroom for local and national governments to access up-to-date information on electronic/mobile governance. For African Governments to make the most of emerging technologies, countries need to invest heavily in infrastructure, Aida Opoku-Mensah, Director of the ICT, Science and Technology Division of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) told participants in her opening remarks.“We need to capitalize on M-applications for public service delivery in areas such as health and education services,” she told the senior policymakers, practitioners and experts on electronic and mobile government initiatives attending the workshop. The workshop has been organized by UNECA in partnership with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs. read more

Telestack bulk material handling range at CONEXPOCONAGG

first_imgTelestack is to display some of its mobile bulk material handling equipment at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2014 In Las Vegas, which is being attended by IM. This will be Telestack’s third time at the show as an exhibitor and since its first visit in 2008 it has sold over 140 machines and counting in the North American market as well as building on introductions at previous shows. On display this time will be three machines that are new to the North American market. The factory sales and technical teams will be on hand to meet with existing and potential dealers and customers as well as potential new dealers and customers. The exhibit will include the world launch of the latest model in the Telestack tracked mobile hopper feeder range. This unit has been developed in response to feedback from dealers and customers and can be used in a multitude of applications from reclaiming in mines, quarries and ports to loading mineral barges on inland river networks. Also on display will be the latest generation in its tracked radial range. The TC424R incorporates a number of design/performance improvements that have come from customer input over the past two years. The company states: “In many applications, this range from Telestack is becoming more popular than traditional track conveyors as it allows customers to combine the benefits of track mobility for ease of moving around the site/moving from site to site, being able to build radial stockpiles from one fixed position without having to reposition the crusher/screener thus reducing downtime and wheel loader operating costs, and also being able to operate the unit using the PLC program to reduce segregation/degradation and keep dust levels to a minimum. In fact a lot of the time the Telestack TC Radial range will do all that the operator needs a radial telescopic unit to do, but at a much lower capital cost.” The third unit on display is the new water-cooled TC 420 X which is the first of this new design to arrive in North America and replaces the successful previous model.Videos and photos will display the rest of the Telestack family of equipment including radial telescopics, tracked mobile truck unloaders and tracked mobile link conveyors. In 2014, Telestack says it is looking forward to expanding its quarrying/mining customer base which includes Martin Marietta, Teichert, Vulcan, Tilcon, Oldcastle, CRH, Lafarge, Holcim, Cemex , Hanson Aggregates – Heidelberg, Iluka Resources and others. “We are proud to have been selling equipment in North America since 2007 and our ‘best in the industry’ network of full service dealers ensures we are able to fully support our customers. Telestack are continually looking to expand our network of dealers in North America and the rest of the world and we invite any company with an interest in selling our equipment to visit our booth. Our equipment is operating all over the world, often in extreme and harsh conditions. This proven record of performance coupled with our ability to continually innovate mobile bulk material handling solutions to meet the requirements of our customers helps ensures that we will continue to expand our product offerings in the years ahead.”last_img read more

MTAme is the Least Helpful Subway Map Ever

first_imgAlexander Chen’s subway map is clever, beautiful, and insanely well-designed. It’s also probably the least useful subway map ever created. The Google employee created this HTML5-based app using a 1972 subway design template and the Metro Transit Authority’s public API to create a dynamic, self-generating map using real-time train departures. The lines double as strings, plucked each time they cross. FabFi an open source wireless network for 60 per node

first_imgWhen the Internet first appeared people saw it as an open communication network as well as a place to learn and share. But with its continuing success and growth the regulation and control of information on the web has increased. ISPs now monitor what subscribers download (and upload) in certain countries, anonymous accounts can have their owner uncovered with a court order, and some governments have the ability to turn off the Internet as and when they see fit. There’s also the growing question of net neutrality and how far governments are willing to go to protect it.All of the above goes against the freedoms the Internet offers, and you might be surprised to hear that one of the first countries pushing hard against it is Afghanistan. Although that push comes out of necessity rather than choice.AdChoices广告Look at any country that is facing unrest and you see a government trying to control the flow of information both outside of their country and within it among protestors and “troublemakers”. With most connections to the Internet controlled by a few corporate entities, this is an easy thing for a government to do. The way around this is to bypass such companies completely and setup an alternative Internet. In Afghanistan a select few people are creating such a network and have called it FabFi. Funded through a grant offered by the National Science Foundation, as well as the savings of those indviduals involved in setting it up, FabFi at the moment is a small-scale wireless Internet located in the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad. A similar network is also appearing in Kenya.FabFi consists of a number of nodes transmitting a wireless signal a few miles. Each node is currently transmitting as far as 3.7 miles with connection speeds as fast as 11.5Mbps. While the distance and speed may seem limited, the thing that makes FabFi worthwhile is its cost and openness. Each node on the FabFi network is open-source, made from building materials that are commonly available in the region, and cost a mere $60 to setup. That low cost and open nature mean anyone can create a node suggesting FabFi could soon criss-cross the country creating Internet access completely free of government control. If a node is taken offline, another can be built easily to replace it. If enough nodes are built, then the removal of one may not even affect access. As well as offering an open Internet link, FabFi is leading to work for those who know how to create and install a node and then maintain it. The project is also continually developing so as to support more users, embrace meshing technology, and reduce costs even further.Read more at FabLab Global Projects, via Fast Companylast_img read more

Watch Archaeologists Explore 170YearOld Shipwreck Frozen in Time

first_imgStay on target ‘Titanic Is Deteriorating’: New Images From Dive Reveal Deca…2,000-Year-Old Shipwrecks With Cargo Discovered Off Greek Island The wreck of a long-lost ship from a historic 1845 expedition has astounded archaeologists exploring the site in the icy waters off King William Island in Canada’s Arctic.Parks Canada and Inuit are working in partnership to explore the wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror ― the fabled (and doomed) ships of the 1845 Franklin Expedition that set sail from England in search of a Northwest Passage. Both ships, which carried a crew of roughly 130 people, vanished. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that the wreckage sites were discovered. Now, researchers are getting the first, thorough look at one of the ships, the HMS Terror, using small remotely-operated vehicles (ROVs) to observe deep inside the historic vessel’s interior. The expedition to study the Terror wreck is one of the largest, most complex underwater archaeological undertakings in Canadian history, according to Parks Canada.Incredible, never-before-seen images have revealed to archaeologists that the wreck is astonishingly well-preserved, as if “frozen in time.”A bunk, drawers and shelf in a cabin on Terror’s lower deck. (Photo Credit: Parks Canada, Underwater Archaeology Team)“The ship is amazingly intact,” Ryan Harris, the lead archaeologist on the project, told National Geographic. “You look at it and find it hard to believe this is a 170-year-old shipwreck. You just don’t see this kind of thing very often.”Parks Canada’s Underwater Archaeology Team set off for the site of HMS Terror aboard the research vessel, the RV David Thompson on August 7. This year, the team’s research on HMS Terror focused on 3D structural mapping and exploring the interior of the wreck using an ROV.Over seven days, the team scientifically and systematically explored the interior spaces of the wreck of HMS Terror for the first time. Researchers conducted seven ROV dives and explored 20 cabins and compartments on the ship.Bottles and other artifacts on a shelf in a cabin on Terror’s lower deck.(Photo Credit: Parks Canada, Underwater Archaeology Team)“We were able to explore 20 cabins and compartments, going from room to room,” Harris told National Geographic. “The doors were all eerily wide open.”The team managed to get clear images of over 90 percent of the lower deck, Parks Canada said.Archaeologists were also stunned to find shelves in the pantry still lined with plates and glasses, beds and desks in order, and scientific instruments still in their cases. The team believes that journals, charts, and perhaps even early photographs may still be preserved under blankets of sediment.A storage compartment in Captain Crozier’s cabin, partly covered by silt and marine life (sea anemones), with one of the cabin’s stern gallery windows clearly visible in the background.(Photo Credit: Parks Canada, Underwater Archaeology Team)The team, however, was unable to access the captain’s sleeping quarters. “Intriguingly, it was the only closed door on the ship,” said Harris. “I’d love to know what’s in there.”Nevertheless, the team is hoping that the well-preserved wreckage still contains written documents that could help to answer many of the questions surrounding the mystery of the Terror’s demise — and the fate of the Franklin Expedition, which has been shrouded in mystery since 1845.1845 illustration of the ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror used in Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated attempt to discover the Northwest Passage. (Photo Credit: Illustrated London News / Getty Images)According to National Geographic, what is known about the 1845 expedition is that Sir John Franklin set sail in May with a crew of 133 men and orders to discover the Northwest Passage, something explorers hadn’t been able to accomplish for centuries. Franklin was given two state-of-the-art ships, which then set off for Canada’s Arctic in the hope of eventually reaching the Pacific Ocean. The crews of two whaling vessels were the last to encounter the Erebus and Terror — in July 1845 on the crossing from Greenland to Canada’s remote Baffin Island. After that, the ships were never heard from or seen again.More on Geek.com:‘Titanic Is Deteriorating’: New Images From Dive Reveal Decaying ShipResearchers ‘Accidentally’ Discover 19th-Century Shipwreck in Gulf of Mexico2,000-Year-Old Shipwrecks With Cargo Discovered Off Greek Islandlast_img read more

Giggs warns Chelsea not to underestimate United

first_imgWales national football team head coach Ryan Giggs has warned Chelsea and manager, Maurizio Sarri not to underestimate Manchester United when both teams face off this weekend. The Blues host underperforming United in the Premier League as they look to maintain their unbeaten record in the season so far, however, Giggs insists Jose Mourinho’s side have the attacking prowess to trouble any team in the league including the joint leaders. The former Manchester United winger m believes the club’s 3-2 victory over Newcastle at Old Trafford prior to the international break shows just Chelsea cannot afford to take the Red Devils lightly in Saturday’s game.“There’s lots being spoken about Manchester United and Jose Mourinho, but if you go back to the last game against Newcastle then them coming back like that you’d hope would give them massive confidence,” the Old Trafford legend told Sky Sports.Tammy Abraham, ChelseaChelsea hat-trick hero Tammy Abraham hopes for more Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Tammy Abraham hopes this season will be his big breakthrough at Chelsea after firing his first hat-trick for the club in Saturday’s 5-2 win at Wolves.“This is the period that United need to be getting up for the games and I wouldn’t be surprised if they come through this period pretty well because they are capable of playing against and matching the good teams.”“With the attacking ability they’ve got they’ve always got a chance.”“For example, Anthony Martial didn’t play well in the first half but in the second he came out flying and that’s nothing to do with the manager, that’s the player doing it for themselves, so sometimes you can’t put everything on the manager.”“They got three goals in the last game so obviously the attacking threats are there, obviously you’d like to get that attacking intent for 90 minutes but if you play like that against Chelsea and go 1-0 down it’s a long way back – you can possibly get away with it against so-called lesser teams.”last_img read more

Lotus will show a new sports car in 2020 with much more

first_img 0 54 Photos British sports car maker Lotus is enjoying new life after receiving a huge investment from China’s Geely. We’ve heard rumors about a possible all-electric hypercar, but Phil Popham, Lotus’ new CEO, says there’s a whole lot more in store.Speaking to Roadshow in Los Angeles this week, Popham says he wants to “illustrate that Lotus is well-funded.” Lotus has an ambitious five-year plan that’s been approved by Geely. The first new product we’ll see is a two-seat sports car, which is expected to debut in 2020.Popham says the new sports car will address a number of so-called “hygiene factors” that haven’t always been present in Lotus’ prior wares. Specifically, he mentions onboard technology, passenger comfort and some actual practicality. Of course, Popham says that none of this can come at the expense of the car being great to drive. It can’t “compromise Lotus’ DNA,” he says. Another day, another special-edition Lotus Exige Lotus 10 Photos Following the launch of this new sports car, Lotus will create a number of other products built on a brand-new platform. Popham says all these future products will be “conceptualized, designed and program-managed” by Lotus in the UK — “no badge engineering,” he says.New sports cars will be spawned by this platform, of course. But Popham says this architecture will be flexible enough to support other vehicle types — “I wouldn’t rule out anything,” he told Roadshow. In early 2018, reports surfaced about Lotus mulling an SUV, and this new platform could provide the basis for such a vehicle. Popham reminds us that Lotus will only move into segments that will allow a product to retain the company’s driver-enjoyment-above-all ethos.Regardless of vehicle type, Popham says electrification will be a big part of Lotus’ future cars. Electric powertrains won’t be the only option, but indeed, Popham sees the need to add this sort of tech to remain competitive in the future.Geely’s investment in Volvo Cars certainly did wonders for the Swedish automaker, and Popham is excited about the possibilities with Lotus. TCS gets reduced penalty of 420 mn in IP theft case

first_imgA Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employee works inside the company headquarters in Mumbai in this March 14, 2013 file photo. REUTERS/Danish SiddiquiIT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a division of Tata Sons, on Sunday said a US court has more than halved the compensatory and punitive damages demanded from the company to $420 million in a lawsuit filed by Epic Systems Corporation, PTI reported.”Partially granting TCS motion, the court significantly reduced the compensatory and punitive damages of $940 million awarded by the July verdict in April 2016, to $420 million,” Mumbai-headquartered TCS said in a regulatory filing issued on Sunday.”The company did not misuse or derive any benefit from Epic’s documents and plans to defend its position vigorously before the trail judge as well as in appeal,” TCS said in its filing.A US grand jury order had slapped two Tata group companies — TCS and Tata America International Corp — with a $940 million fine in a trade secret lawsuit filed against them by Epic in April 2016, the PTI report said.In a lawsuit filed in October 2014 at the US District Court in Madison, Epic had accused TCS and Tata America International Corp of “brazenly stealing trade secrets, confidential information, documents and data” belonging to Epic. The lawsuit was further amended in January and December 2015.The Wisconsin court in April 2016 had directed the two Tata group companies to pay $240 million to Epic Systems for allegedly ripping off its software, besides $700 million as punitive damages. The report quoted TCS as saying that it has received a legal advice that the order and reduced damages awarded are not supported by evidence presented during the trial and a strong appeal can be made to the superior court to fully set aside the jury verdict. An opinion and order has been issued by the Western District Court of Wisconsin in the suit filed by Epic against the company, the report said.TCS said the order will not have any impact on second quarter financial results expected on October 12.last_img read more

first_img January 12, 2012 — RaySearch Laboratories AB announced that version 2.5 of its RayStation treatment planning system has been released for clinical use in Europe and the United States, and is pending regulatory approval in Canada. The new version includes a wide range of new features and improvements.RayStation 2.5 includes all of RaySearch’s optimization algorithms for volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT), intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and 3-D conformal radiation therapy (CRT) alongside a comprehensive set of tools for CRT planning, meaning that the system can be used clinically for treatment planning of all various modalities of photon therapy. RayStation 2.5 also has full support for combining these techniques in the same treatment. In addition, the new version includes improvements of RaySearch’s multi-criteria optimization (MCO) solution for IMRT. This highly intuitive tool lets the clinician evaluate the impact of changing different treatment priorities in real-time, which has a large potential to speed up the time-consuming treatment planning optimization process. The MCO solution has been developed in collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Mass. From the start, RayStation was designed to handle 4-D adaptive radiation therapy and the new release includes groundbreaking features in this field. Using advanced deformable registration algorithms RayStation 2.5 allows the users to perform dose-tracking. This offers the possibility to perform accurate dose accumulation of any delivered or planned dose to any patient geometry while using any combination of computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), positron emission tomography (PET) and 4-D CT data sets. RayStation is the first treatment planning system that lets the clinicians monitor the impact of a changing patient geometry as the treatment progresses, and easily adjust the treatment in the same system. The dose-tracking functionality was developed in collaboration with Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, Canada, and is available for installation in Europe but is pending regulatory clearance in the United States and Canada. In addition to the new features, RayStation 2.5 includes major improvements and performance enhancements that further facilitate and speed up the treatment planning process. For example, the collapsed cone clinical dose engine has been re-implemented to improve speed, and the digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) capabilities have been further improved. Examples in the usability area include extensive use of templates throughout the system, unlimited undo functionality and keyboard shortcuts expected in modern software.“We are very proud that we now can offer the first complete version of RayStation. The system is now ready to be the workhorse for all photon treatments for all types of clinics, from smaller ones to large university hospitals with very advanced needs”, says Johan Löf, CEO of RaySearch. “We have a long-standing reputation of excellence in the field of optimization and firmly believe that we have now taken the lead in the field of adaptive therapy as well.”For more information: www.raysearchlabs.com FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 News | Radiation Therapy | August 16, 2019 Drug Accelerates Blood System’s Recovery After Radiation, Chemotherapy A drug developed by UCLA physician-scientists and chemists speeds up the regeneration of mouse and human blood stem… read more News | Brachytherapy Systems | August 14, 2019 Efficacy of Isoray’s Cesium Blu Showcased in Recent Studies August 14, 2019 — Isoray announced a trio of studies recently reported at scientific meetings and published in medica read more News | Proton Therapy | August 08, 2019 MD Anderson to Expand Proton Therapy Center The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center unveiled plans to expand its Proton Therapy Center during a… read more Technology | January 12, 2012 RayStation 2.5 Treatment Planning System Released News | Radiation Oncology | July 31, 2019 Laura Dawson, M.D., FASTRO, Chosen as ASTRO President-elect The members of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) elected four new officers to ASTRO’s Board of… read more The MD Anderson Proton Therapy Center expansion is expected to be completed in 2023. I was fascinated to listen to the NFL Network cove

first_imgI was fascinated to listen to the NFL Network coverage after Thursday night’s game and hear Kurt Warner talk about how the Cardinals are using Larry Fitzgerald more inside than outside and its causing him to face a lot of zone coverages. Fitzgerald obviously had his most success in the league being outside where he is better once he can get that big body going. As an inside player, you have to be ready to adjust your route all the time depending on the pressure. There are a ton of adjustments for inside players, a lot of reads to make. It is much more of a mental game. You become more of a thinker. Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling The Cardinals still use their $120 million receiver on the outside, just not as much as he is used to and not as much as he should be. I imagine the Cardinals’ offensive brain trust wants to get Fitz away from defenses rolling a safety over the top of him and causing double coverage. But when defenses see Larry inside, they go zone and he is not in man-to-man coverage where he excels. Playing inside has caused Fitz to play much slower than he is accustomed to. He was never great at getting separation, whether lining up inside or outside. He is great at is getting position. He uses his body as well as anyone in the league at shielding/screening off defenders and uses his reach and great hands to make catches even with a defender in tight coverage. The numbers don’t lie. Fitz is having a down year. He is not playing as a top receiver in this league, just an average one with 32 catches for 432 yards. He’s only topped the 100-yard mark once this year while failing to rack up 70 yards in five games — including two where his total was under 35.That’s certainly not the Fitz we are accustomed to. I’m sure the hamstring injury is playing some role in his ineffectiveness, but I tend to think it has more to do with the way he is being used.
